Retail & Office Spaces
Retail and office buildings of any size can benefit from the widest range of drainage systems that provide aesthetic solutions. A wide choice of materials and decorative grate styles are offered to provide synergy or contrast to the overall design scheme. "Invisible" slot options are also very popular.
ACO offers grates that are wheel chair, bike and high heel safe for areas with pedestrian traffic such as:
• Shopping malls
• Department stores
• Retail stores
• Outlet malls
• High-Rise buildings
• Office buildings and complexes

Case Studies
-
4 World Trade Center
ACO Brickslot 100 provides discreet pedestrian area drainage at 4 World Trade Center, preventing pooling while blending into the plaza design and supporting accessible circulation without compromising the site’s refined finish. -
Central Valley Plaza FedEx Center
ACO PowerDrain S200K with ADA compliant grates was specified to eliminate ponding around the walkway at a FedEx Office site. The channel moves stormwater quickly to keep pedestrian routes safe during both light rain and heavy downpours. -
Mountain America Credit Union
ACO StormBrixx 600 HD delivered 9,068 ft³ of storage for Mountain America Credit Union in a smaller footprint than the original CMP design, avoiding utility conflicts and costly relocations. Its 95% void ratio and four-layer configuration met volume requirements within tight site constraints -
One Wachovia Center
ACO SlabDrain H100KS-8 with stainless edge rails and ADA stainless grates was installed at One Wachovia Center’s plaza. The shallow invert fit an existing recess in the elevated slab, providing discreet, effective drainage that complements the upgraded pedestrian space and improves all-weather access. -
Summer Street
ACO KlassikDrain K300 was installed along the walking path on Summer Street to capture runoff and keep pedestrian areas dry. The durable channel provides pedestrian-safe drainage, reducing ponding and slip hazards while maintaining clear, accessible passage. -
Union Tower West
ACO KlassikDrain KS200 with Type 665Q ADA compliant grates lines the base of the glass façade at Union Tower West, keeping perimeter walkways dry. KS200 met the owner’s single-pour requirement and delivered a clean architectural finish with reliable inflow along more than 150 linear feet.
Considerations
Loading
- Parking areas will need to withstand frequent car and truck traffic, a drainage system and grate with a minimum Load Rating of Class C or higher is recommended
- For pedestrian only areas, a system and grate with a minimum Load Rating of Class A is recommended. If wheeled carts are likely for deliveries then a higher load rating should be considered
Application
- ADA compliant, HeelSafe, and/or slip resistant grates may be required in pedestrian access areas
- Wastewater from parking areas may contain hydrocarbons and an oil/water separator may be required
- Commercial food service areas may require a hygienic drainage solution
Areas with large run-off volumes may be ideal for modular water storage such as ACO StormBrixx
