Schools & Universities
School and University drainage is often found in large areas across buildings, sidewalks, sport facilities and parking areas. Most of these areas are used by students and staff on a regular basis and require the use of ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) grates.

Case Studies
-
Arizona Sun Devil Stadium
ACO KlassikDrain K300 was installed at Arizona State University’s football stadium to manage stormwater. The high-capacity channel withstands heavy event traffic and equipment loads, reducing ponding and slip hazards while keeping surfaces accessible. -
ASU Nelson Fine Arts Center
ACO StormBrixx 600 HD was installed at ASU’s Nelson Fine Arts Center to resolve flooding and site drainage while enabling construction on an active campus. The modular retention system replaced a prior arched-chamber design, accelerating phase-two work, minimizing disruption, and supporting green building goals with efficient underground storage. -
Beard Elementary School
ACO Heel-Resistant Brickslot 100 was installed in the new courtyard to manage runoff between the original and annex buildings. The slim slot delivers child safe, low profile drainage for a cleaner, family friendly environment. -
Copperwood Schoolyard Habitat for Environmental Education
ACO’s amphibian walls were installed to safely enclose the Copperwood Schoolyard Habitat, preventing animal escape and intrusion. The durable, rounded-edge design offers a secure underground and above-ground barrier, protecting the new tortoise habitat while ensuring student and community safety. -
Fitts-Woodlard Hall, North Carolina State University
ACO Heel-Resistant Brickslot trench drain was selected during new construction to keep entrances and walkways safe through rainy seasons. Its discreet slot preserves the building’s clean architecture, replacing bulkier drains that would have compromised the finished look. -
George Washington Elementary
ACO StormBrixx 600 HD was installed at George Washington Elementary School to provide underground stormwater storage and prevent flooding. The modular system delivered 22,216 ft³ of capacity and allowed reuse of excavated soil for backfill, accelerating installation while minimizing material hauling. -
Jacob School of Management, Buffalo University
ACO KlassikDrain K200 with 680D wave grates was set along the paver patio between buildings at the Jacobs School of Management at the University at Buffalo. The thin steel edge and patterned grate deliver about 230 linear feet of discreet drainage that complements the architecture and keeps paths clear. -
The Plaza at Harvard University
ACO Aquaduct was installed at Harvard University’s Plaza, a central campus gathering space, to provide discreet and effective drainage during resurfacing improvements. The custom system supports a versatile public area used for markets, concerts, and community events, ensuring durability and performance in this high-traffic, multifunctional space. -
University of Chicago Main Quadrangle
ACO Heel-Resistant Brickslot 100 integrated with KlassikDrain KS100 discreetly intercepts runoff along the University of Chicago Main Quadrangle paths. The narrow slot preserves the historic setting and reduces trip and slip risk while delivering the capacity the campus required.
Considerations
Loading
- For pedestrian only areas, a system and grate with a minimum Load Rating of Class A is recommended. If wheeled carts are likely for deliveries then a higher load rating should be considered
- Parking areas will need to withstand frequent car and truck traffic, a drainage system and grate with a minimum Load Rating of Class C or higher is recommended
- Areas for delivery vehicles will need to withstand heavy vehicle traffic, a system and grate with a minimum Load Rating of Class E is recommended. Drains located in areas where vehicles turn or stop should also consider these additional dynamic loads.
Application
- Food preparation environments may require Hygienic solutions and a stainless steel channel and grate should be considered for these areas, along with appropriate grease traps and/or sediment separators
- ADA compliant and/or slip resistant grates may be required in pedestrian access areas
- Safety and aesthetics in shower areas can be enhanced with linear shower drains
- Athletic fields should consider track and field drainage and accessories from the ACO Sport range
Areas with large run-off volumes may be ideal for modular water storage such as ACO StormBrixx
