Case Studies

  • Brooklyn Battery Tunnel

    Brooklyn Battery Tunnel

    Brooklyn, New York
The Brooklyn–Battery Tunnel is a two-tube tolled tunnel connecting Brooklyn and Manhattan by bypassing the East River. It is the longest continuous underwater vehicular tunnel in North America. Problem: As the four existing drainage installation (entries and exits) were perpendicular to traffic, it was decided that the grated drainage would… Read More
  • Circuit of the Americas - Formula 1 Race Track

Circuit of the Americas – Formula 1 Race Track

    Austin, Texas
Since 1950, Formula One has been the world’s top motor racing championship. Many F1 races were staged in the United States during that time. The final Formula One race in the United States was conducted in 2007 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indiana. It was announced in 2010 that… Read More
  • Executive Housing Development

    Executive Housing Development

    Santa Cruz, California
Our ACO Wildlife Fencing and Climate Tunnel were installed at the Executive Housing Development in Santa Cruz, CA to guide the protected Santa Cruz Long-toed Salamander safely to breeding ponds. Recycled plastic tunnel entrances and barrier systems ensure safe passage, meeting conservation requirements for this exclusive hillside community.
  • F1 Miami Grand Prix

    F1 Miami Grand Prix

    Miami, Florida
ACO MonoBloc HD200 was installed at the Miami F1 circuit to rapidly capture and redirect rainwater along the track perimeter. The one-piece design withstands extreme vehicle loads, maintaining consistent surface conditions, reducing hydroplaning risk, and enhancing safety and performance during wet weather.
  • Government Bridge

    Government Bridge

    Davenport, Iowa
ACO BridgeDrain was installed on the Government Bridge to manage deck runoff. Scuppers collect water at the surface and tie into the existing pipe network, helping prevent ponding and deicing chemical buildup while simplifying maintenance and extending deck service life.
  • Huguenot Road Bridge

    Huguenot Road Bridge

    Richmond, Virginia
ACO BridgeDrain was installed at the Huguenot Road Bridge to remove stormwater from the deck. Discrete scuppers capture runoff and discharge away from the surface, reducing splash and spray and improving safety during rain.
  • I-75 Highway

    Flint, Michigan
ACO TraffikDrain 100 was installed along an 8-mile stretch of I-75 near Flint, MI to eliminate ponding on a flat roadway. Continuous trench runs with high-intake ductile iron grates and cast-in rails deliver rapid water evacuation and heavy-duty performance, improving safety while reducing grading costs.
  • IDOT 7 West I90

    IDOT 7 West I90

    Rosemont, Illinois
The project for West I90 by O’Hare Airport was divided into three phases. Milling, resurfacing, shoulder rumble strips, and drainage system improvements are all component of project plan for phase two. Problem: For phase two, all operations specified by the engineer must be followed. Those objectives include excavation, frames, grates,… Read More
  • Las Vegas Grand Prix

    Las Vegas Grand Prix

    Las Vegas, Nevada
The project stands out as a testament to the flexibility and innovations by ACO. Custom channels, grates, and junction boxes were design and manufactured specifically for this project. Problem: The PowerDrain was used as a cable chase primarily with a secondary use for nuisance water. The PowerDrain runs span across… Read More
  • Stackpole Road

    Stackpole Road

    Somersworth, New Hampshire
Stackpole Road is a major intersection in Somersworth, New Hampshire and is prone to ponding water after heavy rainfall and melting snow. Problem: The ponding water causes numerous road hazards for the drivers in the area. ACO Solution: ACO Infrastructure MonoBloc HD200 To alleviate the problem, ACO’s MonoBloc… Read More

Considerations

Loading

  • Extraordinary heavy loads may be present and require a drainage system and grate with a minimum Load Rating of Class F
  • Monolithic systems (Monoblok) or those cast into the slab (Qmax) may be required to withstand dynamic loads

Application

  • High capacity intake grates may be required as large volumes are present and tolerance for short-term ponding is low
  • Wastewater from may contain hydrocarbons and post collection treatment may be necessary
  • Bridge decks often require products with minimal weight – ACO BridgeDrain is a lightweight fiberglass scupper system designed specifically for bridge applications
  • Aquaduct custom trench drains are also available for unique applications

Areas with large run-off volumes may be ideal for modular water storage such as ACO StormBrixx
